Some 125 police officers in the North have been caught drink-driving during the last decade, it was revealed today.

Officers caught, including seven in 2007, face a disciplinary hearing but are not necessarily dismissed.

In May 2006, deputy chief constable Paul Leighton warned any officer caught breaking the law would be sacked or forced to resign.

The PSNI last year announced a clampdown on boozing behind the wheel by members after years of convictions.

Campaigners said the minority of rogue offenders were putting lives at risk and called for those convicted to face the sack.

NIO security minister Paul Goggins said police took the issue very seriously.

“An officer convicted by a court of a drink driving offence can expect to face a formal disciplinary hearing,” he said. “This hearing can result in dismissal or a requirement to resign."

Earlier this year, Mr Leighton had faced criticism after suggesting hypothetical situations in which those facing disciplinary proceedings could claim justification.
