A spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade said the blaze broke out at around midday at Conrad House on Gracepark Road. The premises was formerly a convent but had been converted into dormitories, he said.
It is understood two people were injured as the fire started when a hoarding fell on top of them. No further information was available about their condition.
The fire brigade spokesman said up to 14 units had been in attendance at one point this afternoon and that fire workers had managed to save most of the building. A number of units are still tending the fire and they may be on the scene for the rest of the evening, the spokesman added.
