15 junior ministers appointed

The Government has announced the appointment of 15 junior ministers.

The Government has announced the appointment of 15 junior ministers.

Nine of the appointees are members of Fine Gael and six are Labour Party TDs.

A number of TDs considered contenders for senior ministries have been appointed such as Labour's Seán Sherlock and Róisín Shortall and Fine Gael's Fergus O'Dowd and Brian Hayes.

Mr Sherlock will be Minister of State for Research and Innovation at the Department of Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation and Department of Education and Skills.

Ms Shortall will be Minister of State for Primary Care at the Department of Health.

Mr Hayes will serve as Minister of State for Public Service Reform and the Office of Public Works at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and Department of Finance.

Mr O'Dowd will be involved in the planning of the NewEra development plan as Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.

Other appointees include Fine Gael's Lucinda Creighton, Michael Ring, John Perry, Shane McEntee and Ciaran Cannon. Alan Kelly, Kathleen Lynch and Jan O'Sullivan are the other Labour appointees.

It was announced yesterday that Fine Gael's Paul Kehoe would be Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for Defence at the Department of Taoiseach and Department of Defence and that Labour's Willie Penrose would be Minister of State for Housing and Planning at the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
