Gardai in Monaghan seized 16 cattle at a checkpoint on the Border near Castleblayney yesterday, as part of the ongoing operation aimed at enforcing the ban on the import of live cattle from Britain.

The animals were taken to the Department of Agriculture cattle pound in Cavan.

Gardai and Customs officers have seized 468 cattle in the Border area since Easter. Eleven cattle were seized on Wednesday and 18 on Thursday, also in the Co Monaghan area.

A Department of Agriculture spokesman said all seized cattle "are slaughtered once it has been proved they came across the Border and that they originated in Northern Ireland. They are slaughtered and rendered."
