Electronics company SCI Ireland is to lay off 125 temporary workers at its Fermoy plant in Co Cork.

Human Resource Manager Ms Cass Fitzpatrick told ireland.com the redundancies were due to the global economic climate and the uncertainty following the September 11th attacks.

Ms Fitzpatrick said demand for the company’s products is subject to peaks and troughs and consequently a significant portion of the staff are employed on a temporary basis.

She said: "The company hopes to re-employ the workers some time in the future".

The workers involved have been issued with details of companies who are actively recruiting in the area, she added.

Workers were informed of the company’s decision yesterday. The factory already employs 600 permanent staff.

Meanwhile there are also reports that electronic component manufacturer APW is to let 40 workers go at its plant in Galway.

The US-owned company - which employs 126 staff - cited a global downturn in demand for its products as the reason.
