THE IVORY COAST: About 170 foreign pupils, mainly from the US, were trapped yesterday in an international boarding school in the Ivory Coast town of Bouake, held by rebel soldiers, a school official said.

Mr Evan Evans, an administrator at the International Christian Academy, set up in 1962 for the children of missionaries based in west Africa, said authorities were trying to evacuate the pupils.

"There's about 170 in all, mostly American, but we do have some French-Canadians and Dutch children as well," he said. Bouake was captured by rebel soldiers on Thursday as others attempted a putsch in Abidjan. - (AFP)
