A Co Clare woman was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment yesterday at the Central Criminal Court for assault with the intention to rob of a man found beaten to death in a ditch in 1998.

Deirdre Rose (20), Claris ford, Killaloe, Co Clare, was found guilty last May of assaulting John Carroll (21), Cappamore, Co Limerick, on December 4th, 1998, at Newport, Co Tipperary. Earlier she had been found guilty of the murder of Mr Carroll and was given an automatic life sentence. Mr Justice Carney said Rose took no direct part in the killing of Mr Carroll but "on account of the doctrine of joint venture, she was convicted".
