Ankara - Nineteen protesters were injured and 46 others detained yesterday when security forces swooped on demonstrators condemning a crackdown in an Ankara prison last year.

Two officers were also injured in the scuffles as police intervened in central Ankara, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The demonstration was held ahead of the opening trial of 86 inmates charged over a riot in Ulucanlar prison in September 1999.

The riot prompted a violent response by security forces which claimed the lives of 10 far-left militants and left 20 others injured.
