About 2,000 homes were without electricity yesterday, due to high winds. Gusts of between 60 and 80 m.p.h. damaged power supply in pockets of the country. Winds were most severe in the north and north-west.

A fallen line cut power to the 400 householders on Aranmore island in Donegal yesterday morning. ESB crews repaired the fault from early yesterday and all homes were reconnected to their power supply by nightfall.

Some 150 households in Bray, Co Wicklow were without electricity when a power cable fell. In Stillorgan, Co Dublin, 100 homes lost power yesterday. In both cases, electricity supply was reconnected by 1 p.m. In Kilkenny, 1,200 homes had their electricity supply cut but it was restored by 4 p.m.

Met Éireann issued a gale warning for yesterday and has predicted some prolonged thundery showers for today. Winds will continue to slacken but widespread frost and wintry showers are expected. It will continue to be unsettled this week, with thunder and snow a possibility.

It will remain cold, with occasional showers which will be heavy at times. Thundery weather is expected in parts and sleet or snow may fall on higher ground. According to Met Éireann, the weather will be worst in Munster and Leinster where more prolonged falls of rain are expected.
