A truck carrying a load of yeast went over the bridge in Slane village on Monday and into the River Boyne.

The driver of the Limerick-registered truck and a passenger escaped with minor injuries.

The bridge has been the scene of a number of fatal accidents. Work by Meath County Council and the National Roads Authority on improving safety conditions there is under way.

Among the measures designed to slow the descent of cars and trucks approaching the bridge from the northern end of the village is an additional set of traffic lights about two hundred yards before the bridge, but these are not yet operational.

Slane is on the main Dublin-Derry road and diversions were put in place last evening while the truck was lifted out of the river.

The most recent fatality on the bridge was the death in 2001 of local toddler David Garvey.

He died when his mother's car was crushed by a truck behind it as it waited in traffic to cross the bridge.

The traffic calming measures, to be completed by September, include segregating heavy goods vehicles from other vehicles, and slowing down traffic as it approaches the bridge.

Meanwhile, the National Roads Authority hopes to have identified a preferred route for a by-pass of the village by the end of this year.

The final routes under consideration will be decided upon in the coming weeks and put on display for submission by the public.
