Software company Thompson Scientific is considering a proposal to close its plant in Limerick which would result in the loss of 200 jobs.

The company said the proposal was part of a wider move to integrate its patent and literature editorial production processes which would see a transfer of work from its facilities in Limerick, Glasgow, Manchester, London to facilities in India.

Statement from Thoson Scientific

The announcement comes during a bad week for the Irish economy, with Motorola considering a plan to close its Cork plant with the possible loss of 350 jobs and Vodafone Ireland confirming today it was seeking 100 redundancies.

In a statement today, Thompson Scientific said it had entered into a 30-day period of consultation with affected employees but it said that if the proposal goes ahead it could result in approximately 200 positions being declared redundant.

The Connecticut-based company - which develops software for the science and healthcare sectors - said the proposal would not impact other Thomson Scientific operations in Ireland.

It said: "If the proposal goes ahead it will be implemented in stages and is expected to take around 18 months to complete".

"We will make every effort to ensure that affected employees are kept informed of progress during consultation and will make sure that we have appropriate staff available to answer employee questions and outline options as they emerge," it added.

The company said in order to maintain its market position in the face of increased competition it needed to take action urgently.
