The decision to reduce the workforce at the electrical appliance factory from 805 to 580 was made public this morning.

The Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms Harney said she was extremely disappointed by the announcement and said the priority now was to find alternative employment for the people in the area who have lost their jobs.

The head of the IDA in the South East echoed Ms Harney’s sentiments and said it was regrettable that Braun was making the job cuts but Mr Brian Conroy said the reduction was indicative of the financial pressures the company was under.

Reacting to the announcement, the Tanaiste said the IDA’s eight million euro investment in a 70 acre Business and Technology park in Carlow would offer people affected by Braun’s announcement an alternative source of employment.

She said that FAS would meet with the staff to be made redundant to ensure "they have the skills necessary to avail of alternative employment opportunities."

She also praised the role played by Braun as an employer in the county and expressed her hope that the company would "continue to make a major contribution to the local economy in the future".
