RWANDA: Ireland will contribute €250,000 to assist the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), the Minister of State for Development Co-operation and Human Rights, Conor Lenihan, announced yesterday.

The Irish funding will be earmarked for outreach activities in rural communities in Rwanda and for medical support to witnesses living with HIV/Aids.

President Mary McAleese visited the tribunal, which is based in Arusha in Tanzania, in June.

The ICTR was established in 1994 by the UN Security Council for the prosecution of those responsible for serious crimes during the Rwandan genocide of 1994, in which 800,000 people died.

The tribunal's voluntary contributions fund, which the Irish donation will assist, is used to finance work programmes that are essential for the effective discharge of the organisation's mandate but which are not provided for in its regular budget.
