At least 26 people are now known to have died after a coach carrying Polish pilgrims crashed near the French city of Grenoble today.

The coach was descending a steep incline between Grenoble and La Mure when it smashed through roadside crash barriers, plunged down a fast flowing stream and burst into flames.

It was carrying 51 Polish nationals who were returning from a pilgrimage to the shrine of Notre Dame de la Salette, where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to two children in 1846.

Local television has reported that nine survivors are in a serious condition.
