Dublin City Council has received 261 claims for damage caused to homes during construction of the Dublin Port Tunnel, according to Independent TD Finian McGrath.

To date, 261 residents in the areas of Fairview, Marino, Drumcondra and Santry have applied for damage to be assessed by Dublin City Council and an independent body.

While more than 140 residents have had their homes repaired by the council or received an agreed sum to employ an outside contractor to undertake the works, another 120 households are in negotiations with the council, according to Mr McGrath.

"Figures show there have been 187 cracks, 39 hairline cracks, nine cases of damage to doors and windows, two severely damaged roofs, three major plumbing problems and another three cases of glazing in windows being damaged," he said.

Mr McGrath identified one case whereby a resident received €19,000 for damage to a kitchen and living room and another where €165,000 was awarded when half of a house was demolished.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Port Tunnel said the average payment per household was €5,700.

She added that €1.5 million had originally been set aside to compensate residents and the amount awarded to residents to date was within budget.

The process whereby residents can request a survey of their house and lodge a claim for compensation was described as "indefinite", as long as the damage is directly attributable to the port tunnel works.

On Friday last, the National Roads Authority indicated that the tunnel would open within 14 weeks when all safety checks are complete.
