Almaty - Three young men working in a psychiatric hospital in Kazakhstan have been charged with murdering seven prostitutes and eating them, a local Interior Ministry spokesman said yesterday.

A police investigator told a local television station the three had ground up the women's flesh and made "pelmeni" - Siberian meat ravioli - out of them.

An Interior Ministry spokesman, Mr Aman Ismailov, said the men had "given evidence as to their guilt", adding that only four of the seven murders had been fully investigated.

Mr Ismailov said the three men being held by police in the commercial capital, Almaty, would be undergoing psychiatric examinations.
