New York - About 30,000 runners took to the streets of New York yesterday, cheered on by two million spectators, in an emotional demonstration of the city's spirit and resilience in the wake of the September 11th terror attacks.
Taking part in the 32nd annual marathon, the entrants from about 100 countries put aside security fears and directed their energy into honouring the slogan "United We Run".
"It's wonderful to see the whole world connected here," Mayor Rudolph Giuliani told the contestants before they started from Staten Island.
