A bookmaker has been ordered to pay £32,500 in excise penalties for failing to collect duty on 33 bets placed at her bookie's shop. Ellen O'Mahony, of Oliver Plunkett Street, Bandon, Co Cork, pleaded guilty to the charge and five other related charges following an investigation by the Revenue Commissioners. The bets related to a period between June and September 1992, and included one on the £2,000 Guineas winner, Rodrigo de Triano, in June 1992.

The five other charges covering 40 separate offences included failing to issue tickets with the date and time of the bet and failing to enter the amount of the bets in a special book on time. They also included charges of failing to retain the betting slips for six months, failing to include every bet in her returns and failing to pay the duty on bets in time.
