More than 35,000 people are expected to take part in today's Women's Mini-Marathon in Dublin, the 20th running of the annual event.

The race starts from Fitzwilliam Square at 3 p.m. and ends at St Stephen's Green, with participants expected to take anything between 34 minutes and three hours to complete the 10-kilometre course.

Traffic diversions will be in effect along the route, which takes the runners away from the city centre via Baggot Street, Northumberland Road and Merrion Road, before they reach the half-way point at Nutley Avenue.

From here, the field crosses the Stillorgan Road fly-over at UCD and returns to the city by way of Donnybrook, Morehampton Road and Leeson Street, before finishing on the south side of St Stephen's Green.

The east side of the Green, which serves as the assembly area, will be closed for the duration of the race.

The mini-marathon is the world's biggest all-female event of its kind, and has become a major focus for charity fundraising.

Last year's instalment raised some £4 million, despite a reduction in entries because of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

Just under 31,000 took part in 2001, compared with the record 39,300 in 2000, when the event raised about £5 million for charity.

Participants in today's race are advised to be at the assembly area at around 1 p.m. They are also asked to arrange to meet family and friends well away from the finish line, to ease congestion.
