TURKEY: A Turkish court sentenced a man to 36 years in prison yesterday for the accidental killing of a Scottish toddler in an Aegean Sea resort last year.

Two-year-old Alistair Grimason was sleeping in his pram at a seaside cafe in the town of Yeni Foca when he was hit by a stray bullet from a gun fired by Daimi Akyuz (32), during an argument at a nearby table. Akyuz was also convicted of killing another man in the shooting. Two other people were wounded in the incident.

The court sentenced another man, Birol Sarcan, to three years in prison for aiding and abetting Akyuz.

Alistair lived in Scotland with his father David and his mother Ozlem, who had been in Turkey to visit her parents at the time of the shooting. The Grimasons have since campaigned for tougher gun-control laws in Turkey.
