The expanison of an insurance firm, the opening of a new hotel and growth in a technology firm will generate 400 new jobs in Donegal, Dublin and Cork.

US health insurer UnitedHealth Group is to expand its operations in Letterkenny, Co Donegal and create 200 additional jobs.

The insurer currently employs 340 people in IT and medical claims processing in Letterkenny. The new positions are to be split evenly between the divisions.

The company has some 70 million customers in the US. It also has clients in the Middle-East, Europe and Asia.

UnitedHealth Group said the strategic location of the Letterkenny plant, the energetic workforce available to it and its relationship with the IDA were important drivers behind the decision to expand its Irish business.

Donegal TD and Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said the development was a "significant and remarkable boost" for the region.

Separately, the Gibson Hotel has opened at the Point Village in Dublin.

The boutique hotel is spread over five stories and will employ 120 staff. It will be operated by Choice Hotels Ireland.

Technology and services provider PFH has announced that it is to create 80 jobs across the group.

The first phase will be 25 position created by the end of this year with the remainder created by mid-2011.

The jobs will be based in Dublin and Cork. The opportunities will come in product development, engineering, sales and marketing and administration.
