Nearly €440,000 of suspected drug money has been seized by customs officers at Rosslare Europort.

Nearly €440,000 of suspected drug money has been seized by customs officers at Rosslare Europort.

The money was discovered in the door panels of a car which was about to board the car ferry to France yesterday.

Two Irishmen, one in his 20s and the other in his 30s, were travelling in the car at the time.

A Customs spokesman said it was believed the money was being exported to finance the importation of large a consignment of drugs. The cash was detained under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

“The find was made as a result of risk profiling by customs staff,” said a spokesman.

“Officers later applied for, and were granted, a three-month detention order under the Proceeds of Crime Act to carry out further investigations, by Judge Gerard Furlong at Gorey District Court.

“Customs and gardai from Wexford Garda station will investigate the source of the cash.” A total of €2.9 million has been detained by Customs officers under the Proceeds of Crime Act so far this year.
