The international arm of ESB has officially opened its largest project, a power plant built in the Basque region of Spain as part of a joint venture with Osaka Gas.

The €500 million project at Amorebieta, near the city of Bilbao, has been completed three months ahead of schedule.

A syndicate of 24 international institutions was involved in the project financing. This plant will use combined cycle technology to generate electricity from natural gas.

ESBI managed the development, financing and construction of the 800mw plant and can contribute up to a third of the energy requirements for the two million residents of the Basque region.
