A line-up of "enormously credible bands" is how you follow U2, says Slane Castle owner Lord Mount Charles, who is expecting at least 60,000 people in his back garden on Saturday for the 21st Slane concert.

Unlike last year, however, there are still tickets available for this year's event, which is headlined by The Stereophonics, with support from The Charlatans, Nickelback, Counting Crows, Ocean Colour Scene, Doves and The Revs.

Lord Mount Charles says the line-up will satisfy a diversity of tastes.

Last year the venue hosted two crowds of 80,000 for each of the U2 concerts, and it is not easy to be next up on stage after them.

At the annual Garda press conference to announce details of the traffic and safety plan, the emphasis was on people having fun but tempered with a warning to stay away from the Boyne.

"The river provides a backdrop for the castle and stage but it is particularly dangerous this year and is swollen because we have had such a wet summer," said Supt Eamonn Courtney.

Garda divers and local river rescue and Civil Defence teams will be patrolling the river to ensure that no one tries to swim their way to the concert site from the far side.

"It is known as a hungry river; admire it but stay away from it. If you think you can swim across it you are crazy," said Lord Mount Charles.

Some 600 gardaí will be in Slane on the day and there will be a special sitting of the District Court to deal with anyone arrested.

Chief Supt Michael Finnegan confirmed the Garda force was slightly down on last year. This was because there had been an operation in place to target ticket touts and counterfeit tickets and a number of forged tickets were seized in the lead up to and at the concerts.

"For security reasons we couldn't let the crowd overflow but we have no reason to believe that this is an issue this year," he said.

The Garda traffic plan is the same as previous years and involves the sealing off of Slane village from 10 p.m. on Friday until the early hours of Sunday.

Traffic diversions will be in place on the N2 south of Slane at Kilmoon Cross and at Ardee on the northern end, and will divert the traffic onto the N1 via Drogheda before it rejoins the N2.

Only residents with special passes and those with tickets will be allowed past the Garda diversions. Following criticism last year, a special corridor has been built in Slane to accommodate locals.

There is no official camping available and gardaí have appealed to people to arrive on the day of the concert and leave immediately afterwards.

As well as the Garda under-water unit, the dog unit, horse unit and air-support unit will be there on Saturday.

Promoter Eamon McCann and Lord Mount Charles both appealed to concert goers to respect the people of Slane and their property.

This year is the last year the concert is taking place under the terms of a planning permission granted by Meath County Council.

From next year on it will operate under the licensing system introduced last summer to facilitate the second U2 concert.

Tickets are priced at €49.50 and can be purchased from any of the72 Ticketmaster outlets nationwide.

The gates open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with The Stereophonics due on stage at 8.30 p.m.
