Fifty-seven "skunk" cannabis plants, each with an estimated street value of £1,000 when mature, were among 77 plants seized by gardai during recent raids in the Louisburgh area of Co Mayo.

The seizures under "Operation Clean Streets" were made by gardai based in Westport. They raided a house where cannabis resin was found and follow-up investigations led to a search of two further houses.

A total of 57 cannabis plants were discovered in one house inside which there was an area being used as a cultivation plant. A further 20 plants were found in another house. Investigations are continuing and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
