A man who stabbed the brother of murder victim, Ms Imelda Riney, has been jailed for eight years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Terry Maughan (22), Cap pagh Fields, Cabra, pleaded guilty to wounding Mr John Riney on the night of August 14th-15th, 1997.

Det Garda John Ryan said Mr Riney was so traumatised by the slaying of his sister by Brendan O'Donnell that he took to drink and began living rough. He said Mr Riney had been invited by Maughan and his companions to sit drinking with them under the canal bridge. After some time Maughan began demanding money from the victim and eventually forced him to strip naked. When Mr Riney said he had no money Maughan stabbed him three times in the back with a knife.
