Some 80 per cent of child restraints in cars are improperly installed, a Road Safety Authority (RSA) survey has found.
Announcing its child car seat "Check It Fits" road show today, the RISA highlighted results of their latest survey.
The results of the 2005 road show found 7 per cent of car seats were ineffective, 28 per cent needed a minor adjustment, 29 per cent needed a major adjustment, and 18 per cent were incompatible with the cars they were in.
"It is entirely possible that there are still large numbers of cars travelling on our roads with either the wrong child seat in place or with them incorrectly installed," said UK Child Car Seat Installation expert Mark Bennett.
Child passengers in cars account for 57 per cent of casualties on Irish roads.
The road shows run from 9.30am until 4pm at six venues across the country in the coming week, allowing parents to have their child seats professionally checked and any problems with their installation fixed.
The road shows are on at Blanchardstown SC on Saturday; Newhall Retail Park, Naas, on Sunday; and Mahon Point SC, Cork, on Monday.
They are also being run at Childers Road Retail Park, Limerick; on Tuesday, Sligo Retail park, Sligo, on Thursday; and Golden Island Shopping Centre, Athlone, on Friday.
