£90,000 damages for leg injury

An American woman was awarded £90,000 sterling yesterday for a leg injury she received while on holiday in Northern Ireland. Ms Nancy Raby (56) was walking through St George's variety market in Belfast when she fell and hurt her left knee in September 1995.

For months afterwards she needed a frame to help her walk and, although she no longer requires it, she still has a limp. The injury forced her to give up her $30,000 a year job in customer services. Her solicitors, O'Reilly Stewart, said it was unlikely that she would be able to get comparable work. Mrs Raby, of Roselle, New Jersey, sued the market's owners, Belfast City Council, in the High Court in Belfast. Her claim was settled out of court.
