Dublin's new Archbishop: Archbishop Diarmuid Martin was born in Dublin on April 8th, 1945. He attended the Oblate school in Inchicore; the De La Salle Brothers in Ballyfermot, and Marian College, Ballsbridge. He studied philosophy at UCD and theology at Clonliffe College.
He was ordained by Archbishop McQuaid on May 25th, 1969. He continued studies in moral theology at the Angelicum University in Rome. In 1973-74, he was curate at Cabinteely, Co Dublin, and from 1975 was responsible for the pastoral care of Dublin pilgrims during the Holy Year in Rome.
He entered the service of the Holy See in 1976, at the Council for the Family. In 1986 he was appointed under-secretary at the Council for Justice and Peace, and in 1994 became its secretary. In December 1998 he was appointed titular Bishop of Glendalough and ordained by Pope John Paul at St Peter's Basilica on January 6th, 1999.
He represented the Vatican at major UN conferences on social questions in the 1990s and also dealt with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund on international debt and poverty.
He has addressed conferences organised by the bishops of the US, Australia, Peru, Scotland, and the Council of Latin American Episcopates, the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences, and the Commission of the Episcopates of the EU.
In March 2001, he became an archbishop and was appointed Vatican permanent observer to the UN and the World Trade Organisation in Geneva. He was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Dublin on May 3rd, 2003.
