Those shining new stainless steel trams busying themselves along the streets of Dublin are going to take up space, and existing road users and pedestrians need to adapt to their presence.

"The tram system is new in Dublin so people need to take a moment to familiarise themselves with the new road signage," says Bruno Fualdes, safety manager of Connex Transport, operators of the Luas.

"In particular, people need to remember that tram lanes are reserved for the tram only, so they should not be driving in them. And pedestrians shouldn't cross the tramway when a tram is approaching. When you are crossing a tramway you should look in both directions."

The advice for everyone is to stay out of tram lanes. But if the only way past an obstruction in traffic is by temporarily pulling out into the tram lane, make sure there are no trams approaching - in either direction - and that your way through is clear. You must be able to get back into your own space straight away. If you can't get through, don't go into the tramway.

Road vehicles may only enter tram lanes to overtake stationary vehicles or obstructions in an adjacent traffic lane if there is no need to stop in the tram lane.
