Michael McDonagh from Connemara and the hooker Star of the West are among the western participants in the documentary Beyond My Shore, which will be broadcast on Teilifis na Gaeilge tomorrow (10 p.m.).
Filmed by Cian de Buitlear, skipper of the hooker, it recounts the voyage he undertook with his wife Bairbre, McDonagh, Irish-language broadcaster Seamus Mac Donncadh, former merchant seaman Mick Redmond from Dublin, navigator Mary Lamb and Australian-based Columban missionary Father Derek Harris from Dublin to Scotland's Hebrides and then back around the north-west Irish coast to Connemara.
Through the use of archive footage, the history of the craft is examined, with Michael McDonagh's father, Mairtin Jimmi, who worked on the turf boats in the 1960s. Oh, and there was one other crew member who may not have featured too much in the log - toddler Colm de Buitlear, who undertook his first sea journey before he was born.
