Madrid - A car containing 100 kg of explosives was detonated by a Spanish Civil Guard bomb disposal team yesterday morning, Jane Walker reports.

Suspicions were aroused when a car, which proved to have false number plates, was found abandoned on the main road linking Catalunya and Aragon on Monday. The road was closed overnight and traffic diverted to give the explosives experts time to examine the car and blow it up in a controlled explosion.

A lorry-driver saw a young woman leaving the car on the side of the road on Monday and drive away in another vehicle. There is little doubt that the car belonged to ETA, whose members believed they were approaching a police control.

Investigations are under way to determine whether the car was primed for a bomb attack or whether the terrorists were transporting the explosives for use at a later date.
