Residential house builder Abbey today reported slightly lower full-year profits.

The company recorded a pretax profit of €57.26 million on sales of €206.9 million for the year ending in April. This compares to €60.21 million on sales of €201.52 million the previous year.

The company said that its UK sales were sluggish and behind expectations, but that the Irish sales remain healthy.

The board of directors recommended a final dividend of 22 cents per share, up from 20 cents per share last year.

Company chairman Charles Gallagher said trading in the new year is progressing steadily, albeit the more challenging conditions being encountered are likely to result in a lower level of profit this year.
