ABBEYLARA  APPEAL: The State's appeal against a High Court decision upholding a challenge by 36 gardaí to an Oireachtas sub-committee inquiry into the fatal shooting of John Carthy at Abbeylara, Co Longford, is expected to conclude before the Supreme Court on Monday.

Yesterday, Mr Donal O'Donnell SC, for the gardaí, concluded his submissions, which focused on his contention there was no inherent power in the Oireachtas to conduct such inquiries.

Mr Diarmaid McGuinness SC began his reply on behalf of the Attorney General and will continue his submissions on Monday. Mr Carthy died after he was shot four times by the Garda Emergency Response Unit following a siege at his home at Abbeylara in April 2000.
