There were fourteen deaths from accidental poisoning last year, according to a new report from the National Poisons Information Centre.

The centre received 12,655 calls last year from health staff in relation to suspected poisonings, 4,377 of which were related to children under the age of ten. Most cases of poisoning occurred in the home.

Paracetamol is the agent that is the most implicated in poisonings. In most cases of poisonings in children, the report found that household products, medicines and cosmetics were involved.

The centre advises that parents keep all medicines in their original packaging and to keep dangerous chemicals locked up and out of reach of children.
