A €600,000 children's mystery and adventure film, Secret of the Cave, is to be shot on location on Achill Island, Co Mayo.

A 50-strong crew from the Southern Adventist University, Chattanooga, Tennessee, will arrive in Achill in April for five weeks of filming.

A driving force behind the project is Westport-based Independent councillor Keith Martin, whose mother is a native of Achill. Cllr Martin is heading up the establishment of the Mayo Film Commission which aims to attract film-makers from around the world to use Mayo as a location.

The film, a Christian-themed production, will tell the story of an American teenager who spends part of the summer at his uncle and aunt's house on Achill and finds adventure and mystery in a small coastal town.
