The Sinn Fein president, Mr Gerry Adams, will fly to the US next Tuesday with his party colleagues, Mr Martin McGuinness and Mr Caoimhghin O Caolain, to meet the US National Security Adviser, Mr Sandy Berger.

A Sinn Fein spokesman said a $500-a-head fund-raising dinner for 300 people at the Plaza Hotel in New York on Thursday night had to be cancelled after demand for tickets surpassed space. The dinner will now be at the Waldorf Astoria where 500 people will dine.

During the five-day visit, the ein delegation will also meet the new US Secretary of Commerce, Mr William Daly.

???ein said no meetings were set up with US President Mr Bill Clinton and Vice President Mr Al Gore, as they are on vacation.

The delegation will meet other senators, including Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator Chris Dodds in Washington. They will meet the Mayor of New York, Mr Rudolph Guilliani, on Friday.

Mr McGuinness will travel to San Francisco on Saturday to visit three IRA prisoners, Kevin Artt, Terry Kirby and Paul Brennon, all from Belfast, who escaped from the Maze in 1983 and who are involved in extradition proceedings.

Mr O Caolain will travel to Chicago on Saturday where he will host a fund-raising dinner.
