A heroin addict is to undergo medical tests to try to allay the fears of a young student garda he bit during an arrest struggle.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told that trainee Garda John Burke was on his first temporary assignment out of the Templemore Training Centre last August when he encountered Stephen Fagan, who bit him on the wrist, drawing blood.

Fagan (20), of Lower Rutland Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty to the assault on August 8th, 1994.

Fagan also admitted stealing over £21,000 in cash and cheques from the Hollybrook Hotel, Clontarf, on October 2nd last year and the theft of £2,167 from a Blackrock newsagency on November 23rd, 1994.
