A HEROIN addict who stabbed a garda with a syringe while trying to escape arrest for suspected robbery has been found guilty by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Martin Quinn admitted he had used the syringe to inject himself with heroin about two hours before he stabbed Det Garda Declan Claffey twice in his left hand with it.

Quinn (23), Moorfield Avenue, Dublin 22 was convicted of assaulting Det Garda Claffey, occasioning actual bodily harm, on June 9th, 1996.

He was also convicted of two further charges of assaulting Det Garda Claffey to resist his arrest and his lawful apprehension for robbery.

Judge Joseph Mathews remanded Quinn in custody for sentence on March 13th.

He also directed the preparation of probation and urine analysis reports which were requested by defence counsel Mr Luigi Rea.
