Afghanistan’s interim leader Mr Hamid Karzai has arrived in Washington on his first official visit to the United States to discuss the future of his country.

Mr Karzai is to meet with members of the Afghan community today before a formal meeting with President George W Bush tomorrow.

Speaking on Radio Kabul before his departure, Mr Karzai said peace and security were "most essential" for Afghanistan and the $4.5 billion in aid pledged by international donors must be used "judiciously".

It is the first official visit of an Afghan head of state to the United States since 1963, according to the Afghan embassy in Washington.
