After a bleak midwinter, spring seems set to arrive with temperatures 18 degrees forecast

SPRING IS expected to well and truly arrive this weekend after what feels like the longest winter in living memory

SPRING IS expected to well and truly arrive this weekend after what feels like the longest winter in living memory. The temperature is likely to hit 18 degrees in parts of the west as temperatures reach unseasonal highs, a welcome respite from the cold and wet which has dominated since before Christmas.

The last four months have seen below-average temperatures and the start of April saw snow in places. This winter was the coldest since 1963 and March, which was supposed to herald the start of spring was the coldest in some places for 22 years.

The warm weather will be welcomed by everybody, but particularly by farmers. They have had a run of bad luck stretching back to last summer’s washout which was followed by flooding and then the cold spell which started just before Christmas with very little respite since then

As a result of the cold winter, grass growth is up to five weeks behind normal.
