Agent dismisses Newell's 'bung' claims

Football agent Dennis Roach has dismissed Luton manager Mike Newell's claims that a bung culture remains rife in the game.

Football agent Dennis Roach has dismissed Luton manager Mike Newell's claims that a bung culture remains rife in the game.

Newell caused controversy this week by alleging that agents and club officials regularly offer "sweeteners" to managers to hasten transfer moves.

Roach, who also acts as a spokesman for the International Association of Football Agents, told BBC Radio Five Live: "You can't come out and say something like this. He has got to put enough evidence together before he comes out and speaks. He should take it to the FA to root these guys out but if he hasn't got it he is in trouble."

Newell will discuss the matter with the Football Association next week but Roach insists he has not seen any evidence bung payments still go on. He feels wages are now so high that additional payments are unnecessary.

"The situation has changed. Players, managers and chairman all take large proportions out of the game. Players get a lot of money," he said.

"In the old days that didn't happen but in recent years the level of wages make any talk of bungs - particularly at the top level - pathetic.

"If he has any evidence he has to tale to the FA but I fear for Mike Newell if he is already appealing for other managers to back him up."
