The Irish ambassador to Moscow will today meet with the Belarusian ambassador to clarify concerns on reported restrictions on children suffering from the Chernobyl disaster travelling abroad for rest and recuperation.

This diplomatic effort will be mirrored in London where the Irish ambassador to London will meet with the Belarusian  ambassador-designate to discuss the same issue.

Yesterday the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Ahern said he was concerned  at indications that Belarusian authorities might restrict travel abroad by children.

Revealing that he had been taking a child from the Chernobyl Children's Project to his home for the last nine years, Mr Ahern said the new regulations would add to the isolation of Belarus from the rest of Europe.

He said the issue was one of the utmost concern to the Government and added that he was raising the issue at EU level.
