Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern today strongly condemned the bomb attacks on the Egyptian resort of Sharm-al-Sheikh that killed over 80 people today.
He said the series of bomb attacks were "cruel and senseless [and] deliberately designed to kill and injure innocent people."
He offered his sympathies affected by the attacks and said that to date there was no information indicating that any Irish had been hurt.
"I have instructed an official from our Embassy in Cairo to travel to Sharm-al-Sheikh to provide any consular assistance that may be required to Irish people there."
A 17-year-old Irish girl, Tara Whelan, was killed last week in a bomb attack by Kurdish rebels on Turkish holiday resort.
A group linked to al qaeda has claimed responsibility for the Egypt attack and the Department of Foreign Affairs today reiterated its warning to Irish citizens considering a trip to Egypt.
The department said there is a serious threat of terrorism in Egypt, particularly in tourist areas. There were three separate incidents in Cairo in April 2005 in which tourist areas were targeted.
It advises citizens in Egypt to be vigilant, especially in commercial establishments and public areas, including tourist sites.
