There were sharp exchanges when Fianna Fail again raised the question of Luas, the proposed light rail system for Dublin. The party leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, asked the Taoiseach if he was satisfied that the deadline for EU funding could be met, given that the Commission had ordered a further study.

The Ceann Comhairle, Mr Sean Treacy, said the matter was not relevant to the Order of Business.

Mr Bruton observed: "I would love to debate this with Deputy Ahern in view of his own record in the matter."

Mr Ahern: "So would I." He asked if the Taoiseach would provide Government time for the issue.
