A root and branch study of Fianna Fail's Galway West constituency has called for a review of the party's “elitist” corporate tent at the annual Galway Races, it emerged tonight.

The hard-hitting report, which also demands a headquarters in Galway city, was presented to party leader, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern during a visit to Salthill this evening.

The authors call for a review of the corporate tent at the Galway Races because large sections of the organisation in Galway West believe it "creates a sense of elitism and isolates many people".

The working group that compiled the report recommended that the organisation should look at ways to make it more open and inclusive.

Chairperson of the working group, Nioclas O Conchubhair, who presented the report to Mr Ahern, said Fianna Fail should urgently review how its national organisation is performing.

“Any successful organisation must review its operation on an ongoing basis, assess its strengths and weaknesses and develop plans to re-energise to meet new challenges,” he said.

“Successful organisations identify issues that need to be addressed and develop a strategy for progress.

“It has been obvious for some time that the Fianna Fail organisation should take some time to assess how the organisation is functioning.”

The report also found that a fresh approach was needed at all levels of the organisation and it recommended a number of steps that Fianna Fail needed to take in order to engage fully with all sections of society at national and local level.

It suggested party bosses should set-up a constituency headquarters in Galway city as a focal point for the organisation and to act as an information point for the community.

The report also recommends that a number of new committees be set up including a social committee and a statistical information committee.
