Judge Tony Hunt in the Central Criminal Court criticised the security systems in the bank and said there was clearly a deficiency in AIB’s keyholding procedures as he sentenced Danny Hamill (49), Clanmaurice Road, Donnycarney, to 12 years in prison for robbing the Crumlin branch.

A spokeswoman for AIB said the bank did not comment in detail on court proceedings, but it had since dealt with issues in its security arrangements.

“We regularly carry out reviews of our security procedures and we have addressed the issues referred to by the judge,” she said.

She added that she was not at liberty to comment specifically on what AIB had done to address the issues. When asked how the situation arose which saw Hamill acquiring three front-door keys to the branch and a knowledge of the bank’s system, the spokeswoman said she could not comment.
