Goma - Air raids on two insurgent strongholds in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) killed 45 people, many of them children, and wounded more than 50, rebel officials said yesterday. Witnesses in Goma, on the Rwandan border, and Uvira, just across from the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, said the aircraft that dropped the bombs on Tuesday evening - reported to be a propellor-driven Antonov - was accompanied by a jet.
"There are people who have been blown to bits and whom it will be hard to identify," Commander Bob Ngoye, the leading aide to the rebel military chief, Commander Jean-Pierre Ondekane, said in Goma.
