Tour operator Budget Travel said airlines which charged customers an extra fee to carry bags had a "rip off" mentality.

"Low Cost carriers are luring customers to book holidays with cheap introductory offers and then penalising them with additional extra charges such as baggage fees and fuel surcharges," Budget Travel marketing head Clem Walshe said at a brochure launch today.

"The reality is that baggage fees can add as much as €104 per person or €416 per family (two adults and two children) to the cost of a holiday."

But Ryanair, which charges customers €6 for each checked-in bag, denied it was ripping customers off.

A spokeswoman said that 45 per cent of passengers were now choosing to travel without checking-in luggage. She said it cost the airline to handle a passenger's bag and its cost structure meant customers had to pay for services.

Aer Lingus, which charges between €5-€8 per bag, on its European flights is also reported to be considering introducing charges on its US flights.
