Police chiefs must establish a specialist unit in Northern Ireland to deal with sex offenders, the Ulster Unionists said today.

South Belfast MLA Michael McGimpsey also demanded full disclosure on all rapists and paedophiles living in his area.

He hit out at the authorities' handling of the risk posed by offenders after learning there was nearly twice as many in the area as the next highest district.

Ninety-seven men and women either convicted of sex crimes or undergoing prosecution are now based in flats and houses across south Belfast, a new report has revealed.

Next highest on the list of those subject to Multi-Agency Sex Offender Risk Assessment and Management (Masram) arrangements was Derry and north Belfast, with 53 and 50 cases respectively.

Moyle and Magherafelt each have just four cases each being monitored.

Mr McGimpsey said the figures were alarming.

"Our constituency total was in most cases triple or quadruple the average for the rest of the country. Something has gone badly wrong. There are already concerns over police manpower levels in the area.

Police rejected Mr McGimpsey's claims that changes to its arrangements in the area were needed. A spokeswoman said: "The eight new District Command Units (DCUs) came into being at the beginning of April.

"In South Belfast, which continues to cover the city centre area, crime is falling, which shows very clearly that the new structures are working and that there are adequate resources in the city centre."
